Solomon Northup

Twelve Years a Slave

In the pre-Civil War United States, Solomon Northup, a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. Facing cruelty at the hands of a malevolent slave owner, as well as unexpected kindnesses, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity. In the twelfth year of his unforgettable odyssey, Solomon's chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist will forever alter his life.

I hope slavery will be ceased and unfortunate people will live a good life after all. Through all the pages I could feel the sufferings of each person in this book n cried a lot. Black or brown or white everybody deserves to be treated equally

That little paradise in the Great Pine Woods was the oasis in the desert, towards which my heart turned lovingly

"I ask no paradise on high,

    With cares on earth oppressed,

The only heaven for which I sigh,

    Is rest, eternal rest."

They are deceived who flatter themselves that the ignorant and debased slave has no conception of the magnitude of his wrongs. They are deceived who imagine that he arises from his knees, with back lacerated and bleeding, cherishing only a spirit of meekness and forgiveness. A day may come—it will come, if his prayer is heard—a terrible day of vengeance, when the master in his turn will cry in vain for mercy
