Sara Crewe is a seven-year-old girl. She is the daughter of a wealthy tradesman who has left her at Miss Minchin’s boarding school while being engaged in his trade in the Indian subcontinent. Thanks to the financial status of her father, the school’s headmistress Miss Minchin treats Sara like a princess. This special treatment does not spoil the little child, though. On the contrary, Sara develops the moral qualities of a noble lady, showing signs of generosity and modesty among her school peers. Nonetheless, things turn completely upside down when she receives news about the death of her father and the theft of his great fortunes.

The Head of the House of Coombe follows the relationships between a group of pre–World War One English nobles and commoners. It also offers both some interesting editorial commentary on the political system in prewar Europe that Burnett feels bears some responsibility for the war and some surprisingly pointed social commentary.

Frances Hodgson Burnett dedicates the present work to the soul of her lost son Lionel. Burnett’s biographers agree that after this loss Burnett’s depression made her resort to spiritualism. Narrated in the first person, the story is basically a contemplation of existential questions such as the meaning of life and death and the belief in life after death.
