Mosses from an Old Manse, and other stories was first published in 1846. Many of the tales collected are allegories and, typical of Hawthorne, focus on the negative side of human nature.

The Snow Image and other stories was the final collection of short stories published by Nathaniel Hawthorne in his lifetime, appearing in 1852.
