Max Coates

Max Coates is a British author and Senior Lecturer in leadership at St. Mary's University College, UK. He is best known for his work in leadership, emotional intelligence, and coaching. He is also a doctoral supervisor at the University of Buckingham.

Max Coates was born and educated in the UK. He spent twelve years as a secondary head before transitioning to academia. Coates worked for nineteen years at the Institute of Education, now part of University College London. He lectured on leadership, coaching, and team development, with significant international work in Colombia, Ireland, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Pakistan, and the Netherlands.

Dr Coates has authored several books, including Personalising Learning, The Constant Leader, and Shaping a New Educational Landscape. He has contributed to research on pupil underachievement, place and belonging, and multi-academy trusts. His recent publications include Coping with Rapid Change (2017) and It's Doing My Head In (2018).

His latest book, The Relentless Pursuit of Peace (2024), addresses mental health issues, providing practical milestones for better outcomes. Coates demystifies mental health challenges and offers insights backed by contemporary research. The book is accessible yet rigorous, challenging outdated thinking and serving as a practical guide for mental well-being.
