The Newly Diagnosed Chronic Illness Roadmap A Guide Using DBT's Radical Acceptance to Cope With a New Diagnosis and Problem-Solving Skills to Navigate the Healthcare System

Same chair. Same phone. Same shoes.

And yet the future looks as though someone rearranged it while you weren't looking.

THERE IS NO CORRECT WAY TO REACT

Some people leave that first serious appointment holding a folder of instructions, with no memory of anything the clinician said after the third sentence.

Some go home and search the diagnosis until two in the morning.

Some become intensely practical — building spreadsheets before they have decided how they feel.

Many move through all three in a single afternoon.

Shock, fear, anger, grief, disbelief, relief, numbness, curiosity, dark humor. They can all coexist, and none of them means you are handling this wrong.

A DIAGNOSIS ANSWERS AND TAKES AWAY AT THE SAME TIME

It can settle questions that have bothered you for years, while raising new ones that feel much larger. It can bring treatment within reach, while closing doors you assumed would stay open.

That contradiction is part of the territory.

This book gives you two kinds of tools for it. The first comes from Dialectical Behavior Therapy — commonly called DBT.
