Adam Baron

Adam Baron is a British novelist and associate professor of creative writing. He is best known for his novels Blackheath (2016) and Boy Underwater (2018). The latter was nominated for the Carnegie Medal and the Branford Boase Award, winning multiple prizes including the Stockport Schools Book Prize. His latest novel, Oscar's Lion, is scheduled for release in December 2024 by HarperCollins.

Adam Baron began his writing career with four crime novels published by Macmillan. In 2016, he published Blackheath, a literary novel exploring gender politics and the challenges of modern family life.

The book was praised by Rachel Cusk as 'fresh, honest, very funny' and described as 'sensual, involved, poetic, incorrect, and enthralling in its honesty'.

Boy Underwater, his first novel for younger readers, was named Waterstones Book of the Month and was included in The Guardian's Books of the Year in 2018. This was followed by You Won’t Believe This, published in July 2019, and This Wonderful Thing, published in January 2021, both through HarperCollins.

Oscar's Lion, published in 2023, also appeared on The Guardian's list of books of the year. Baron’s novels have been widely translated and adapted for BBC Radio 4. He holds a PhD in Creative Writing from Brunel University.

He teaches on the Creative Writing BA, MA and MFA programmes at Kingston University, where he is also the MA Course Director. He supervises PhD students in Creative Writing.

Adam Baron lives in Greenwich, south-east London, with his wife and three children.
