As John Miles wrote and sang in 1976 “Music was my first love and it will be my last”, I think he was right.

Music has the ability to move us emotionally, and in so doing it burns deeply into hearts, minds and memories.

Brian Eno describes culture as “That which you *choose* to do”, and so in my opinion the music you choose to listen to simply defines your culture.

I recall a period in my life when I could name all of Slade’s single and album releases in order, I could recite the album’s track listings, name the B-sides of all the singles, I knew the song writing credits, the location and date of recording, the names of any guest musicians on individual tracks or indeed any information I could glean from the record sleeve, or in my own particular case the cassette sleeve.

For me the time I spent absorbing all that stuff came in useful in my career as a TV presenter when I was known as Gaz Top and required to do interviews with musicians or introduce artists.
