Matthew Hall is a British screenwriter and crime novelist, best known for the Jenny Cooper series and the CBC legal drama Coroner. His debut novel, The Coroner (2009), was shortlisted for the Crime Writers' Association Gold Dagger, as was his fourth novel, The Flight (2012). He won a BAFTA Cymru in 2018 for Keeping Faith, a Welsh language drama.
Hall was born in England and grew up near the Welsh border, where he now lives. He attended Hereford Cathedral School before studying law at Worcester College, Oxford. After qualifying as a barrister, he practised in London before turning to writing full-time.
He received his first commission for ITV's Kavanagh QC at the age of 27. His first original television series, Wing and a Prayer, was nominated for a BAFTA. He went on to write more than 60 hours of television drama over two decades. In 2018, his work on the series Keeping Faith won a BAFTA Cymru award.
Hall's legal training has informed his fiction. In The Coroner (2009), Jenny Cooper is appointed to the Severn Vale coroner's office following a divorce. She inherits unsolved cases linked by hidden truths. The book introduced the only recurring coroner in British crime fiction.
The second novel, The Disappeared (2009), followed Jenny as she investigated the disappearance of two students. In The Redeemed (2011), the case of a murdered campaigner draws Cooper into a secretive world of political compromise.
The Flight (2012) investigated the crash of Flight 189 into the Severn Estuary and was shortlisted for a Gold Dagger.
The Chosen Dead (2013) linked a man's suicide to the unexplained death of a child. In The Burning (2014), a house fire raises questions about an alleged murder-suicide. A Life to Kill concluded the series with an investigation into a fatal mission in Helmand.
A prequel novella, The Innocent, has also been published. "She is literally the last word on crime," Hall said of Cooper, who serves as the last hope for bereaved families.
There have been translations of the Jenny Cooper books into more than a dozen languages. The series has been adapted for television by CBC and NBC Universal. Coroner, starring Serinda Swan and Roger Cross, has reached audiences across North America.
Matthew Hall lives in Herefordshire with his wife, journalist and former lawyer Patricia Carswell, and their two sons.
