Kate Johnson

Kate Johnson is a British author of romantic fiction with elements of humour, fantasy and adventure. She also writes erotic romance under the name Cat Marsters and has worked across paranormal, speculative and contemporary romantic genres. Her most recent novel is Hex Appeal (2022), a witch-themed romantic comedy set in Essex.

Kate Johnson was born in Leeds in 1982 and moved with her family to Essex as a young child. She attended Joyce Frankland Academy and later lived and worked in various roles before becoming a full-time writer. Her early jobs included work in an airport and a laboratory.

Kate has described herself as someone influenced by romantic comedies and the fantasy of Terry Pratchett, which shaped her interest in writing stories that mix magic and relationships.

Johnson became a published author at the age of twenty-three when she sold her first novella, She Who Dares, under the Cat Marsters name. Her first full-length book, I, Spy?, was published under her own name the following year. She went on to write across genres, gaining attention for her blend of romance and humour.

She achieved wider recognition with Max Seventeen, which won the Romantic Novel of the Year Award in 2017. That win marked the first time a self-published novel received the award from the Romantic Novelists' Association. Under the Cat Marsters name, she also won the Wisconsin Romance Writers' Silver Quill Award and the Passionate Ink Passionate Plume Award.

Her later work included novels such as Death Comes to Cornwall and Not Your Cinderella, both of which were shortlisted for awards in 2021. Earlier titles such as The United Kingdom (2012) and Mad, Bad and Dangerous (2010) also received industry recognition.

Hex Appeal (2022) follows Essie Winterscale, a witch living in a shifting house in the village of Good Winter. The story includes a mix of supernatural housemates, accidental magic and a landlord named Josh who becomes entangled in the household’s history. The book combines comedy, romance and fantasy elements involving witches and village life.

Kate Johnson lives in Essex with several cats and works mainly from home.
