Rebecca is an alternative high school teacher who never planned to have children. Although she believes she has entered menopause, she becomes pregnant with her partner, Reuben. Besides the age-related dangers to herself and her baby, she fears being a bad parent because she grew up with an abusive father and neglectful mother.

Her sister, Martha, a clean-freak housewife, has always judged Rebecca harshly for her footloose life, and considers Reuben as irresponsible as Rebecca. Much to Martha's further aggravation, Rebecca and her niece, Kate-Martha's adult daughter-have a close relationship, and now, a fateful turn of events causes the two families to become irreversibly entangled.

In a supernatural twist, Rebecca discovers a realm that offers surprising insights and lighthearted healing. She learns how to transcend perceived boundaries and heal what previously felt hopeless. Rebecca's journey gives readers a fresh perspective on contemporary human struggles from a different vantage point.
