Making a Mindful Life Inventory (Life Journal)

Set aside some uninterrupted time to reflect on some key areas:

    1) Identify what is most important to you. For example, family, career, health, weight, relationships.

    2) Outline your achievements so far – personal, professional, emotional and so on. For example, improving your resilience or patience.

    3) Note any major events in your life at present or in the future. A house move, project deadline, or family visit, for instance.

    4) Make a list of all the activities and responsibilities you have in a typical week. This might include cooking, golf, eating out, work … You could do this as a diary with hourly time intervals and fill it in over the course of one week.

For each of the above, highlight in three different colours:

    1) The things you enjoy, that bring you happiness.

    2) The things that make you feel anxious, stressed or tired.

    3) Any of those that are beyond your control – for example, losing a job because the company has collapsed.

‘This will be over soon. Whatever they say, I will not dwell on it but go about my day noticing all the positive things in my life. I will not let one person have control over how I feel.’

. The only real moment is the present moment. So much of your time can be spent on yesterday or tomorrow that you miss out on the opportunities of today.
