Chris Lloyd

Chris Lloyd is a Welsh author best known for his Occupation series, which features French police detective Eddie Giral. He also authorises the Elisenda Domènech trilogy, a crime series set in present-day Girona. His novel The Unwanted Dead won the HWA Gold Crown Award and was shortlisted for the CWA Historical Dagger Award.

Chris Lloyd studied Spanish and French at university. He subsequently lived in Catalonia, where he worked in educational publishing and as a travel writer. He later worked as a translator of Catalan and Spanish. He also lived in Grenoble, where he researched the French Resistance.

The Occupation series centres on Eddie Giral, a police detective in Nazi-occupied Paris. The first book in the series, The Unwanted Dead, received critical acclaim and several awards. The second book in the series, Paris Requiem, was named the Sunday Times Best Historical Fiction Book of 2023. The third book in the series, Banquet of Beggars, was published in August 2024. It depicts Eddie navigating the black market while working with the occupying forces.

Lloyd's Elisenda Domènech trilogy follows a police officer who leads a Serious Crime Unit in Catalonia. The series explores crime within the context of modern, devolved policing. Elisenda was first introduced in his 2015 novel City of Good Death.

Lloyd said: ‘I’m fascinated by what day-to-day life was like under Nazi rule, the awful decisions people had to face, the impossible dilemmas and blurred morality.’ He explains that Eddie Giral embodies these moral conflicts as a shell-shocked veteran of the First World War. “He’s willing to do bad things for good reasons,” he noted. 'He’s not a bad man; he just sometimes forgets to be a good one.'

Chris Lloyd lives in a seaside town in Wales with his wife, a jewellery designer. He enjoys European cities, languages, old movies and French jazz from the 1920s to the 1940s.

He is a member of Crime Cymru and helped organise Wales' first international crime fiction festival in Aberystwyth in 2023.
