Deirdre Oliver is an Australian crime writer known for her suspense-driven thrillers filled with dark humour and psychological depth. She is the author of three series: Hannah Tree: Private Detective, Harry Nichols: Investigative Journalist, and the upcoming PC Georgia West police procedural. She has published twelve novels since 2018.
Deirdre Oliver was born in Australia and worked in a range of fields before turning to fiction. She was a professional actress, sculptor, and psychiatric nurse. She began writing crime stories at the age of 50, but her fascination with the genre started early. “I was ten when I pinched my mother’s Agatha Christie library books,” she said.
In 2000, she published her first novels, but her writing career was interrupted by illness. During that period, she focused on short fiction and won several awards. In 2018, at the age of 75, she resumed writing full-length novels. “There simply wasn’t time to pursue publishers,” she explained. Instead, she chose to self-publish and has since written twelve novels, with two more underway.
Her books draw heavily on her background in theatre and psychiatry. This combination brings psychological insight and emotional sharpness to her stories. The Hannah Tree series features a damaged heroine who channels her need for justice into private detective work. The Harry Nichols series is set in Marysville, a town at the foot of the Australian Alps. The PC Georgia West series is due for release soon.
Oliver approaches her writing with the same discipline she applied during her early publishing career. She writes with a sense of urgency and humour, often in the company of her two Siamese cats.
