Feedback Across a Screen is written for remote team leads who deliver feedback through chat windows, video calls, and email threads rather than face-to-face conversations. The book addresses the particular difficulty of correcting course, recognizing progress, and holding people accountable when shared physical space is not available and nonverbal signals are stripped away.

The book opens by examining why screens make feedback feel harder—the absence of vocal tone, facial expression, and the small physical cues that tell you a message has landed. It then introduces a framework for channel choice, treating each tool as a different level of fidelity rather than a matter of preference. Chat carries words and little else; video carries tone, pacing, and expression. Choosing the right channel for the weight and sensitivity of a message is one of the book's central disciplines.

Separate sections address how to calibrate written tone when the reader has no voice to hear, and how timing affects the way feedback lands—including the challenges of asynchronous delivery across schedules and time zones. The book also covers documentation practices that preserve a record without signaling that a case is being built, and a five-beat feedback loop—deliver, acknowledge, support, evaluate, and adjust—that keeps conversations from closing before the work is actually done.

Later chapters take up remote accountability, cultural and individual differences in how direct written feedback is received, and the practical trade-offs of video, chat, and voice notes as feedback tools. A chapter on embedding feedback into recurring team rituals rounds out the framework.

The book closes with two practical reference sections: a set of feedback scripts and templates, and a follow-up tracker designed to keep agreed actions visible until they are complete. Readers will finish with a clear approach to choosing their channel, checking their tone, and following through—regardless of whether they ever share a room with the people they lead.
