Guipure lace, despite its name, is a type of embroidery rather than lace, and so is sometimes known by its proper name ‘guipure lace embroidery’. Lace, with some variants known as ‘thread-lace’, covers a broad family of openwork fabrics, including net. When using a sketchbook you should not necessarily consider a possible future reader – it should be the place where you record, create, formulate and document the development of ideas as well as solve problems, either in written or drawn form. However, if you know that a tutor, boss or client is likely to want to see the sketchbook then it is worth ensuring that everything is clear and appealingly presented.

However, whatever else goes in your sketchbook remember that the clue is in the name – you should sketch in it!
