Don't Tell Me Not to Ask Why

I have failed my mind with my impulsive need

to analyze every word, every gesture

As a child, I was taught not to speak

I was young, what did I know

As an adult, I was still told not to speak out,

it’s disrespectful

They didn’t tell me what love is
at least not one worth keeping
I’ve learned all the things it wasn’t
and so many of the ways it shouldn’t feel

They didn’t tell me it could heal
They didn’t tell me what love is

I sit there waiting for you to cross the
current of my emotions and be an anchor

You do, you always do,

I look at myself and see struggles
You see a fighter

You’re still holding me, don’t stop holding me

I like who I am through your eyes

I don’t want to face it all on my own yet
