“I’m just curious. Don’t worry, even I’m not rebellious enough to get involved with a surrogate.” Which is true. I mean, do they even have normal parts? I’ve heard they have weird abilities. Maybe it changes their bodies or something. I picture a girl lying upstairs with two heads and webbed fingers.

I could do with it if I wanted, if I were free to decide. Who would I choose to marry? I think about all the girls I’ve ever kissed or smiled at or flirted with, and not one of them makes me feel anything. Aren’t you supposed to feel something? Or is that just an antiquated notion that got into my head from reading too many fairy stories as a child? There is certainly no love between my mother and father, or any of my friends’ parents, for that matter.

It just never occurred to me how sad that is.

I feel like I’m seeing a sparrow in a cage, something young and innocent trapped by grasping hands.

And I think that perhaps my own cage is simply larger than hers, so large I have never been fully aware of its edges.

I have to admit, I’m riding a bit of a high. No one suspects I fell into the surrogate on purpose! I feel quite the Master of Espionage.
