Raise Your Rates with a Reason

Raise Your Rates with a Reason is written for established freelancers who already have clients and want to reprice existing services without damaging those relationships. It addresses the specific difficulty of changing a number a client has come to expect, and it does so by working through the problem in sequence: calculating why the change is necessary, saying so clearly, and handling whatever the client says next.

The book begins with cost reasoning—the practical work of measuring the gap between what a service costs to deliver now and what a current rate actually covers. That foundation shapes how a rate increase is framed and explained, because an increase that can be traced to real costs is easier to present and easier for a client to accept.

From there, the book covers the mechanics of delivery: how much advance notice to give and why that choice signals something about the relationship, which channel—email, phone, or video—fits which situation, and how to draft an announcement that carries the rationale without burying it.

The client response section works through three distinct outcomes: acceptance, hesitation and negotiation, and departure. Each is treated as a manageable scenario with its own practical steps. The book closes with guidance on making rate increases a recurring practice rather than a one-time event, and it includes a working worksheet and a set of adaptable announcement and response scripts.
