After being laid off from his comfortable job with a New York financial institution, war vet Brick lands a new gig that sounds like a dream come true: just drive a van and bring home a fortune. But his hopes come crashing down when his curiosity gets the better of him, and he discovers that he's part of a scheme to deliver humanoid artificial intelligence, known as Pets, to the ultra-rich. But these Pets are no mere robots. They think, feel, love, and hurt just like humans do. In order to right the wrongs he's enabled, and to escape the wrath of Vixen, the company's ruthless head of security, Brick will need every ounce of training and skill he'd learned in the Marine Corps. But he can't complete this mission alone.

Her ideas have made her an outcast with many enemies, including Jon Athan, the billionaire mastermind behind Pets. When Brick comes to her asking for help, she knows she must come out of the shadows and put her cybernetic enhancements to use. Together with some unlikely allies, Kat and Brick must dodge airstrikes and assassins to take the fight to the company's doorstep and end the exploitation. But for one of them, the stakes are higher than they could ever imagine, and the greatest danger strikes much too close to home.
