In the heat of the summer, you're stuck in a metropolis so suffocating and claustrophobic. There — you're in Tokyo. Ryu Murakami's In The Miso Soup is a wonderfully disturbing crime thriller that touches deep on the human condition. Like real deep. When a small-time tour guide finds out that his client may have murderous desires, it's up to him to decide if he should put an end to it, or cave in to his own curiousity.

Bourdain is a great writer, as he is a chef — there's no doubt about that. If you've always been reading his autobiographies and adventures in the culinary world, then try this fictional take of what may be a very real world in the kitchen.

Up-and-coming chef Tommy Pagana settles for small-time stint at his uncle's restaurant and finds that he might be a a partner in a big-time crime. And culinary school definitely doesn't prepare him for what happens next. This thrilling Mafia caper is defo for fans of Anthony Bourdain, and anyone who loves a good, hilarious read.

Look, not all of us love summer. The heat, the sun damage, the flies and the sticky, sweaty sheen on the skin….. SKIP. And if you're feeling like a little misfit, well, it's okay. All you Introverts and indoor-loving people can spend the summer holed up reading about other misfits, who end up having the most valuable friendships ever. The Art of Being Normal is not about conforming to social norms, but instead, embracing that normalcy is what you are, and what you define.

If you have a roadtrip that you are taking this summer, then you must — you must! stuff this thriller into your bag. Up the heat, and the excitement with this whodunit from warm Oslo in the summer. A woman has been murdered in her flat, with her finger severed and a pentagram cut into her eyelids. Five days later, another woman is found in the same manner. Is this a serial killer on the loose, a copycat murder, or something a lot more sinister at stake? Definitely going to keep you awake at night, or during the long, boring drives.

What has the title got to do with summer? Nothing really. But what this book is good for is a afternoon by the beach. This whimsical, witty book touches on the effects of a dysfunctional family — making this a non-fluffy read, yet its something not too depressing and dark.

Not all summers are made the same — and neither are they happy. In the summer of 1976, during their annual retreat on Cape Cod, the McKotch family came apart. There's nothing much to say about this fragmented family, except that in the words of Tolstoy, "each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way". The hurt spans 20 years, and The Condition is a slow-burning psychological family portrait that has elements that perhaps anyone could identify with.

This summer, you want to learn about a country who once closed off their world to the rest of the globe. If there's one country, one history, and one economy that you must learn more of, make it Russia. Follow the journey from Gorbachev's freedom to Putin's war, and see how this nation emerged from the grip of the Cold War to become the powerhouse that it is today.
