Oliver Twist

Abandoned at an early age, Oliver Twist is forced to live in a dark and dismal London workhouse lorded over by awful Mr. Bumble who cheats the boys of their meager rations! Desperate but determined, Oliver makes his escape. But what he discovers in the harsh streets of London’s underworld makes the workhouse look like a picnic. Penniless and alone, he is lured into a world of crime by the wily Fagin — the nefarious mastermind of a gang of pint-sized pickpockets.
Will a life of crime pay off for young Oliver? Or will it earn him a one-way ticket to the gallows?

Too old fashioned. I've always been hearing about this book, and that it's great and all . But when I read it myself, even thought I knew it was a classic, therefore based in older times, I found in all most every third word was a word I did not understand, or a word infrequently used in modern day to day life.

Rather complicated language, it was difficult to follow sometimes

I don't know; I really don't know,' said Giles, with a rueful countenance. 'I couldn't swear to him.'
    'What do you think?'

The persons on whom I have bestowed my dearest love, lie deep in their graves; but, although the happiness and delight of my life lie buried there too, I have not made a coffin of my heart, and sealed it up, forever, on my best affections. Deep affliction has but strengthened and refined them.'

The blessing was from a young child's lips, but it was the first that Oliver had ever heard invoked upon his head; and through the struggles and sufferings, and troubles and changes, of his after life, he never once forgot it.
